Update on requesting reviews of marking
11 July 2008
This year, the national curriculum test papers have been largely marked by the same markers as in previous years. These are experienced markers and teachers who know and understand English national curriculum and how to apply the mark schemes.
As in previous years, markers were trained by senior examiners in the use of the mark schemes, and did not commence live marking until they reached the required standard of proficiency.
During the marking cycle, and for the purpose of quality assurance, each marker's quality of marking was checked up to five times to ensure that they continued to mark according to the national standard. Markers who had drifted from the mark scheme were given further training or had their work terminated, and their papers were remarked. This process was more rigorous than last year.
Schools that identify issues of concern with the application of the mark scheme should follow the instructions given in the Reviews guidance for schools. A printed copy of the Reviews guidance for schools booklet was sent to every school and online version is available for download from this website.

It is important that schools wait for both results and a complete set of scripts before making an application for a review.
If schools are able to do so they should make applications for reviews by the 25 July 2008. This will allow reviews to be carried out during August, with outcomes available by the original published deadline of 12 September 2008. Schools are not however expected to complete review applications outside of term time.
Where schools are unable to submit review applications by the 25 July 2008, they should aim to submit by 10 September 2008, and at the latest, 10 days after the start of their term, or after receipt of both scripts and results, whichever is the later.
Please note, this information supercedes all previous information on the deadlines for applying for reviews.
